Music for the Road#1

Asaf Avidan - One day / Reckoning Song (Wankelmut Remix)

By Joseph Bautista

There is a soundtrack for every journey. We’re going to put together a compilation ‘album’. And as a way of thinking and talking about it we’re starting with one person’s journey, Joseph Bautista. Joseph recently travelled across Asia from Burma to the Philippines, we asked him to give us his music for the road, this is part 1. If you’d like to submit a song, let us know at editor@warholschildren.com

the hipster spotters guide #9 the amish hipster

The Amish Hipster

At first glance you think you’re looking at the Amish or maybe men from the 1890’s. Loose cotton shirts, basic pants with the cuffs rolled up, often shoeless or wearing flip-flops. Sometimes dressed up with suspenders and maybe old-school desert boots. It’s all very ‘honest’ and ‘authentic’ and then you notice things like iPads and maybe a few tattoos. It’s game over for the Amish-thing-look. Yup, hipsters have perfected the art of looking authentic, like they’ve rejected consumerism. It’s one of the well-crafted of hipster poses. And it’s sad, some of us like the look, some of us really are in the process of rejecting the mass-produced and off-the-rack consumerism – and now we’re going to be mistaken for hipsters – and all the indignity and cynicism that comes with that. Not to mention what the Amish must be thinking about all these craft –beer iPad carrying organic produce eaters. Damn you Amish hipster. Damn you and the horse you rode in on.

Nostalgia - yeah, we got the jazz

image
By Nick Tapscott
Man, if I had a small amount of permanent brain damage for every time I’ve gotten slightly high and watched cartoons or TV from my childhood and reminisced then I’d probably be jazjidhksjposk inside my kendolkanzlkuxn.

One time I was high after school (So, like, High-School? Geddit?) Reading this old X-Men from the 80’s and watching a re-run of Fresh Prince and I found this poster in the center of the book.

A cartoon Mr T was pointing a threatening finger while The Smurfs, Transformers, Fat Albert, He-Man and all their friends danced around his floating skull. The caption read: “NBC Saturday morning. We got the Jazz.”.

The Filthy Graft and Corruption Prize – from Warhol’s Children

What would you do for a couple of freebie tickets to a music festival? The Snowy Mountains Music Festival to be exact?

A picturesque view and a killer line-up featuring over 120 concerts with headliners Blue King Brown, Jeff Lang and Kylie Auldist of The Bamboos.

We’re waving a free double pass in the air. A willing pair of souls can accompany Warhol’s Children’s Nick (pictured with his head inside part of a horse) and Pam to the festival by answering the question below…

Music for a boring Thursday #24 - the ‘I smashed myself in the head while doing an emergency clean-up because the landlord is inspecting the place in 10 minutes’ edition.

Yeah, that’s right, Warhol’s Children’s very own Nick R was precisely that stupid and now wears a gash on his right temple. Today’s lesson - never clean up when you’re in panic mode. Nick’s been listening to, and loving, Vance Joy’s ‘Riptide’, brilliant song, brilliant clip - Nick this one is for you.

THE WEAKEST LINKS: the 5 Deaths Needed To Improve The Quality of Television Programs.

image

By Emma Bristow

Everyone is going to die some day. I just feel like the world would be a better place if these characters were not currently on television.

  1. Girls – Lena Dunham’s critical and commercial success of a tv show, this season in particular has shown us exactly how much bullshit people are willing to put up with.  Part of the reason why this show has become such a zeitgeist is that it shows us characters who should be unlikeable because they are genuinely awful to one another.  This is great, because lets face it: people are just genuinely awful and flawed at their cores (sorry guys).  So I mean, ideally I would like to kill off all the characters on this whole show, with the exception of Shoshanna who Dunham is reportedly thinking of canning anyway..

GTA V. Gamers Picks

Ok so the hype is upon us. GTA 4 was masterful, this epic textured thing that kept drawing you in deeper and deeper until 12 hours had passed and you’re still totally wired and there’s no way you’re going to stop until your body gives out: only a gamer could understand; yeah that’s GTA. And now GTA V is here. The whole thing gets cranked up a notch or two (or so the hype has us believe) so what does it look like? With this in mind we present the official GTA V trailer…

The original Hipsters #6: TINA FEY

image

By Emma Bristow

It is a truth universally acknowledged that hipster girls love two things: sparkly objects and Tina Fey.  And hey, if Taylor Swift thinks there is a special place in hell reserved for Tina Fey then I can definitely understand the appeal.

If you (much like the rest of the world) failed to appreciate the charm of her critically successful/commercially flimsy meta-comedy 30 Rock then need I remind you that Tina Fey wrote, produced and starred in Mean Girls.  Which basically means that she co-authored half of all memes and gifs on the internet…

Music for a Boring Thursday - The First Literary Edition

I’m having one of those days when I’d like to curl up with a book and a glass of wine. As I type, a miracle may have occurred, a friend has just carried in bottles of wine into the Warhol’s office. We work, we type, we go mad and we may drink. Music is needed to wind this day down. In the vein of celebrating the wordsmiths resting on our home built bookshelves, we’ve strung up a playlist. Songs named after writers, books and any other strange literary references you can throw at us. To start the playlist off we have Bob Dylan with Ballad of Thin Man. The lyrics may name drop an author.

I won’t keep you long from the songs in question so let’s wrap this up. Our resident toddler ends the day with good news: ’I found book, I found book!’

FOMO? OMG, LFMAO… yeah

Breaking down the Jargon with Tahlia Pritchard

Okay we get it. Technology is taking over the world. The other day I got an email about buying a virtual skipping rope. A whaaaaat? Yep, a device you hold in your hands while you pretend it’s a rope and skip. Call me old fashioned, but I just don’t understand why you wouldn’t buy a $2 rope – just sayin.’ But that’s not even the point of this article.

If there’s a name on your ass, we have bad news for you…
We love tattoos, totally love ’em. But there are limits to love. Let’s start with lovers…if you’ve got your lover’s name tattooed to your ass, well… that’s fair game. And there’s a few other tattoo trends that we reckon are in dubious taste… and cataloguing them is what our Top Terrible Tattoo Trends is all about - and from our archives here’s Jade Fosberry’s piece that got the whole thing going: http://warholschildren.me/post/34815503217/10-terrible-tattoo-trends

Lou from Alpine reckons you should listen to this…

By Hannah Chapman

So ages ago I interviewed the lovely Lou from Alpine. And I do not use the word ‘lovely’ because of its convenient alliteration. She legit seemed as if she would be an excellent coffee date.

We tried to make a playlist of her band’s favourite tracks, but experienced various communication fails. But Lou recently sent me a list of her favourite music from Alpine’s recent sojourn to SXSW in Austin, Texas. It was kind of like getting a surprise birthday present from a scatter-brained relative months after the actual day, when you have completely forgotten that people once gave you gifts just for surviving another 364 days. That surprise element makes it extra exciting.

This playlist goes down well on Sunday afternoons and long drives. There’s raw blues, pretty acoustica, a dash of country, and some sassy synthy pop. Mellow sweetness. Cheers, Lou!

1. My Goodness - Blackout Baby
2. St. Lucia - Before the Dive
3. Devendra Banhart - Never seen such good things
4. MØ - Pilgrim
5. CVURCHES - The mother we share
6. High Highs - Flowers Bloom
7. Milk Carton Kids - Michigan
8. Poolside - Harvest Moon (Neil Young Cover)
9. SINKANE - Runnin

You can read Hannah’s interview with Lou here: http://theamericanmodern.tumblr.com/post/41345143408/the-broodier-tangent-to-zurich-an-interview-with-lou

The Break Up: Social Media Phobia.

By Glaiza Perez

(The video, it’s some random k-pop from LEE HI (이하이) - IT’S OVER )

Social media is the way a few people express attachment to the romantic other. The weekly appearance of a gentleman with a signature T-shirt accompanying your friend through your instagram feed (before an admission of love) undoes the practice of secretive dating…
